Le lin, la peine des hommes2009Bookbinder Alain Taral unearthed the 1924 work from a series with the evocative title “La peine des hommes” [the toil of men]. Inspired by the history depicted by the early 20th century author, the artisan created a wood marquetry binding with motifs that evoke flax cultivation and linen processing, as well as the daily life of the workers, and the misfortunes and wealth engendered by the noble, precious and sought-after material.
Alain Taral, France Alain Taral has been applying his cabinetmaking and marquetry experience to books since 1989. To complete his training, he studied binding at the École des Beaux-Arts de Toulon. His works, always in wood, have been exhibited in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan, and have garnered him numerous awards and distinctions in several countries. The subtle play of rare woods makes his marquetries original and sensual pieces.
